Grit / settling chambers are checked full of water without backfill (hydrotest / operation)
Monolithic: top slab cast together with the walls (corner L-bars P14, wall bars run into the slab). Separate: precast / removable cover slab bearing on the walls (no moment joint at the top, wall and slab bars per the Precast table)
Clear inner length
Clear inner width
Clear inner height (base top to top slab soffit)
Opening 1 size along a. Use '+ Add Opening' for more openings (long grit chambers)
Opening 1 size along b (0 = no opening)
Fill + pavement depth above the top slab. Shallow cover = high wheel pressure
Moist unit weight of backfill
Used below the groundwater level
At-rest earth pressure K0 = 1 − sin φ
Design (highest) groundwater level. Large value = no groundwater
From the geotechnical report — used for the base pressure check
Wheel prints are dispersed 30° through the fill and 45° through half the slab
Auto: LM1 1.00 (included), AASHTO 1 + 0.33(1 − 0.125·D[ft]), DIN / NK-80 1.20 assumed — override with your standard's value
B500 = 500 MPa
Nominal cover to the outer bars (base slab +10 mm automatically)
0.2 mm for water-retaining / watertight structures (EN 1992-3), 0.3 mm otherwise
Checked without backfill (hydrotest). Grit chambers default to full height
Leave 0 to size automatically
Leave 0 to size automatically
Leave 0 to size automatically
Auto: when the short clear span exceeds the threshold, beams are proposed and used if they reduce the top slab concrete
Beams are considered above this span; beam spacing ≤ this value
Commercial bar length. Longer bars get lap splices added to the schedule
Lap splice and corner L-bar leg length as a multiple of bar diameter (50Ø conservative for C30/37, B500)
Separate top slab only: practical crane capacity on site. Heavier slabs are flagged with the number of precast panels needed

Buried Chamber Structural Design

Preliminary design and rebar schedule for cast-in-situ rectangular chambers: manholes, valve chambers and grit / settling chambers.

LOADS: self weight (25 kN/m³), soil cover, at-rest earth pressure K0 = 1 − sin φ, groundwater (hydrostatic + buoyant soil), traffic (EN 1991-2 LM1, DIN 1072 SLW 60/30, AASHTO HL-93, SNiP NK-80 or pedestrian) and internal water without backfill.

ANALYSIS: each panel is a simply supported plate solved with the Navier series, using the real wheel layout. This gives an upper bound for span moments; the U-bars of the schedule reinforce both faces.

DESIGN (EN 1992-1-1): ULS bending with γG = γQ = 1.35, minimum steel, shear without stirrups, slab span/depth ≤ 20 and SLS crack width (Tables 7.2N / 7.3N with Eq. 7.6N). Thicknesses left at 0 are increased in 25 mm steps until every check passes.

BEAMS: when the short clear span exceeds the threshold, downstand beams spanning the short direction are sized (bending, shear with stirrups, cot θ = 2.5) and the flat-slab and beam solutions are compared.

CHECKS: flotation 0.9·G ≥ U (EN 1997 UPL) and soil bearing pressure.

This is a PRELIMINARY design for tendering and quantity estimation — the construction design must be checked by a qualified structural engineer.

Key Points:
  • Manholes, valve chambers, grit / settling chambers
  • Selectable traffic model (EN, DIN, AASHTO, SNiP)
  • Automatic wall / slab thickness
  • Ø and spacing selected for every position
  • Top slab beam proposal for large spans
  • Flotation and bearing checks
  • Multiple top openings with trimmers and corner diagonals
  • Corner L-bars and lap splices in the schedule
  • Live plan & section drawing
  • Full rebar schedule and weight
