Saturation: 0.01 ... 350 °C. Temperature + pressure: 0 ... 800 °C.
0 % = saturated water, 100 % = dry saturated steam. Leave empty for both phases.
Gives the heat released when the steam condenses (heating / heat-exchanger duty).

Steam Tables (IAPWS-IF97)

Steam tables give the thermodynamic properties of water and steam. At saturation, water and steam exist together at a temperature fixed by the pressure; the heat needed to turn saturated water into dry steam is the latent heat hfg. Below the saturation temperature water is compressed (subcooled) liquid, above it the steam is superheated. These values come from the IAPWS-IF97 formulation used across the power and process industries.

Key Points:
  • Use absolute pressure: gauge pressure + 1.013 bar (at sea level)
  • Latent heat drops as pressure rises: 2257 kJ/kg at 1.013 bar, 2015 kJ/kg at 10 bar
  • Steam heating uses the latent heat: Q = ṁ · hfg (plus some subcooling of the condensate)
  • Dryness fraction x: 0.95 means 5 % of the mass is water droplets - wet steam gives less heat
  • Entropy is used for turbine / expansion work and for flash steam calculations
  • Covered: 0 ... 800 °C and up to 1000 bar, except the near-critical region above 350 °C (IF97 region 3)
